The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has officially confirmed the arrest of social media activist and commentator, VeryDarkMan, days after widespread speculation and public outcry over his sudden disappearance. The arrest has drawn the attention of human rights organization Amnesty International, which has now issued a statement highlighting four key concerns surrounding the development.

EFCC Confirms Arrest

In a brief statement released Monday morning, the EFCC stated that VeryDarkMan, whose real name is undisclosed, was detained in connection with “ongoing investigations related to cyberstalking, defamation, and alleged financial misconduct.” The commission did not provide further details but said the investigation is “active and sensitive.”

The popular activist, known for his viral Instagram and TikTok videos where he criticizes celebrities, politicians, and institutions, had not been seen or heard from publicly since April 29, sparking a social media campaign under the hashtag #FreeVeryDarkMan.

Amnesty International Responds

Amnesty International Nigeria weighed in on the situation, releasing a statement with four key points that demand immediate attention from Nigerian authorities:

  1. Right to Legal Representation:
Amnesty expressed concern that VeryDarkMan may have been denied prompt access to legal counsel and family members since his detention, which would constitute a violation of his rights under both Nigerian and international law.

  2. Due Process:
The organization stressed that any charges or accusations must be clearly communicated and handled transparently through the judicial system—not via indefinite detention or coercion.

  3. Freedom of Expression:
Amnesty warned against the weaponization of state institutions to suppress dissent, emphasizing that criticism of public figures or institutions does not amount to a crime under democratic principles.

  4. Call for Immediate Release or Charges:
The group called on the EFCC to either charge VeryDarkMan in a competent court or release him without delay, stating, “No Nigerian should be held incommunicado or punished for exercising free speech.”

Public Reactions and Growing Pressure

Several prominent Nigerians, including fellow activists, celebrities, and legal experts, have spoken out in support of VeryDarkMan, urging the EFCC to handle the case with transparency. “You don’t have to like his style to defend his rights,” said media personality Japheth Omojuwa.

Meanwhile, EFCC sources claim the activist’s social media activities “crossed legal boundaries,” including the unauthorized sharing of confidential documents and unsubstantiated allegations against certain political figures.

As of Monday afternoon, VeryDarkMan remains in custody. His legal team has not issued a formal response, though a lawyer close to the family confirmed that they are working to secure his release.

This arrest marks the latest in a series of state actions perceived by critics as a clampdown on Nigeria’s growing digital activism and influencer culture.
