Nigerian Navy Rescues 99 Passengers in Rivers State Boat Accident
In a heroic display of swift response and professionalism, the Nigerian Navy has rescued 99 passengers involved in a boat accident on the Bukuma River in Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The incident occurred on April 29, 2025, when a local market boat known as “Blood of Jesus”, en route from Port Harcourt to Akuku-Toru, collided with a barge along the river route. The impact caused substantial damage to the boat, putting the lives of nearly a hundred passengers at immediate risk.
According to eyewitnesses, the collision occurred suddenly, triggering panic as the vessel began to take on water. Fortunately, a distress signal was received by Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Pathfinder, which quickly deployed four gunboats from its base in Port Harcourt to the accident site.
Navy officials from Naval Security Station 035, located near the scene, led the coordinated rescue operation. All 99 passengers on board the ill-fated boat were rescued without any loss of life or serious injuries, thanks to the prompt response and efficient action by the Navy personnel.
Goods Recovered and Secured
In addition to the rescue of the passengers, the Navy managed to recover most of the commercial goods being transported on the boat, which were at risk of being lost to the river. The items were retrieved and secured, offering some relief to traders and passengers whose livelihoods depend on their riverine commerce.
Official Statement from the Navy
Commander of NNS Pathfinder, Commodore Cajethan Aniaku, praised the swift intervention of the naval team, commending their bravery and commitment to maritime safety.
“The professionalism exhibited by our personnel during this emergency rescue reflects the Nigerian Navy’s ongoing dedication to protecting lives and property on Nigeria’s inland waterways,” he said.
Commodore Aniaku further emphasized that the rescue was carried out under the guidance of the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, who has prioritized safety and rapid response capabilities along Nigeria’s riverine and coastal routes.
Community Reactions
The incident, though traumatic, ended on a thankful note as community members and relatives of the passengers expressed gratitude to the Navy. Several survivors recounted the terrifying moment of the crash, highlighting the Navy’s quick arrival as the difference between life and death.
Local leaders and government officials have urged boat operators to adhere strictly to maritime safety protocols, including the use of life jackets and avoiding overloading.
Conclusion
This successful rescue operation has once again brought to light the critical role the Nigerian Navy plays in ensuring the safety of lives along Nigeria’s waterways. The Navy’s swift response prevented what could have been a national tragedy and served as a strong reminder of the importance of emergency preparedness and professional maritime surveillance.
