The 11th Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) lit up Lagos on May 10, 2025, transforming the Eko Hotel and Suites into a dazzling celebration of African film, television, and storytelling excellence. Organized by Africa Magic in collaboration with MultiChoice, the AMVCAs have become the premier platform for recognizing and uplifting the continent’s top creative talents. This year’s theme, “Rebirth,” captured the transformative journey of African cinema—highlighting its resilience, innovation, and rising global influence.
Celebrating a Decade of Growth in African Entertainment
Since launching, the AMVCAs have celebrated over 267 creatives, contributed ₦10 billion in production investment, and helped generate 30,000+ jobs across the entertainment ecosystem. The awards are widely regarded as a driving force behind the global rise of African cinema, with over 76% of industry professionals crediting the AMVCAs for international exposure.

What’s New in the 2025 AMVCAs?
This year’s edition brought several exciting innovations to reflect the evolution of African film:
Best Music Score Category: A new award recognizing composers and sound designers who enhance storytelling through sound.
International Collaborations: Initiatives to include Black and Diasporan creatives, expanding Africa’s cinematic footprint globally.
Tribute to Nollywood Icons: A new segment honoring the pioneers who laid the groundwork for modern African film.
Refined Jury System: Led by acclaimed filmmaker Femi Odugbemi, the updated process balanced expert insight with audience choice.

Road to the AMVCAs 2025: From Submissions to Nominations
The awards process kicked off with a call for entries from December 23, 2024, to January 31, 2025. Eligible content included films, made-for-TV movies, and series broadcast between December 1, 2023, and December 31, 2024.
The nominee announcement aired on March 23, 2025, showcasing a powerful mix of emerging talent and industry veterans. Top-nominated films included “Seven Doors,” “Lisabi: The Uprising,” and “Skeleton Coast,” while celebrated directors like Robert O. Peters and Daniel Emeka Oriahi brought fresh global perspectives to African narratives.
In total, 28 award categories were presented—split between jury-based technical awards and public-voting categories. Fans cast their votes on the Africa Magic website until May 4, 2025. Special honors like Lifetime Achievement and Trailblazer Awards spotlighted individuals with outstanding contributions to the industry.
A Weekend of Culture, Style & Celebration
Festivities began with a vibrant Cultural Day on May 9, 2025, where stars dazzled in traditional attire that celebrated Africa’s rich heritage. Celebrities like Mercy Aigbe, Adedimeji Lateef, and BBNaija’s Wanni x Handi turned heads on the red carpet.
The main awards ceremony aired live on May 10, starting with red carpet coverage and the show at 7 PM across Africa Magic, Mzansi Magic, Pearl Magic, and Akwaaba Magic via DStv and GOtv.
Musical acts like Johnny Drille, Fido, and Kumie delivered unforgettable performances, adding rhythm and soul to the evening.
Rising Stars and Regional Recognition
The AMVCAs 2025 championed the next generation of African creatives. Gbubemi Ejeye earned a Best Lead Actress nomination for Farmer’s Bride, representing a new wave of talent. Ghana’s influence was also evident, with titles like Amoanimaa’s Era and Yen Ara Asaase Ni earning key nods.
Big Winners and Memorable Moments
“Lisabi: The Uprising” emerged as a major winner, taking home awards for Best Makeup and Best Art Direction. Blessing Uzzi clinched Best Writer for Freedom Way, highlighting the depth of talent across storytelling and production. Other technical categories like Best Cinematography and Best Sound Design shone a spotlight on behind-the-scenes brilliance.
