Ritual Killings and Juju Practices Still a Big Concern in Nigeria

Ritual killings remain a growing problem in Nigeria, often tied to beliefs that human body parts can bring wealth or power.

Vulnerable people—especially children and pregnant women—are usually the main targets.

In this case, He allegedly planned to use the young girl for money rituals.

A 2023 report by African Security Review revealed that more than 300 people lose their lives every year to such ritual killings, with most of the crimes happening in rural communities.

Poverty, low education, and superstitious beliefs are seen as the main causes.

Older reports, such as a 2014 BBC investigation, also showed how juju rituals are used to control victims in human trafficking cases.

These deeply rooted cultural practices continue to put lives at risk, even today.

Social Media Reacts with Anger and Grief

The news sparked a huge reaction online. The X post by Raychriss1, which has over 420,000 views, captured the mood of the nation.

Many users demanded justice, saying the suspect “shouldn’t live among humans.”

People are calling for harsher penalties and more action from the government.

Back in 2022, Nigeria’s House of Representatives had already called for a state of emergency on ritual killings, urging stronger laws and enforcement.

In response, the government has increased public awareness efforts through the National Orientation Agency, but many believe more must be done to end these crimes.

Time for Real Change in Rural Nigeria

This tragic incident in Enugu highlights the urgent need for better education, economic support, and stronger police presence in Nigeria’s rural areas.

As the investigation continues, Nigerians hope for justice and for an end to these cruel and inhuman practices.
