Cowboy Carter: Beyoncé Makes History at 2025 AMAs: Huge Win for Black Artists in Country Music

Beyoncé made history on May 27, 2025, at the American Music Awards (AMAs) by winning Favorite Country Female Artist and Favorite Country Album for her hit project Cowboy Carter.

With these wins, she became the first Black woman to win in a country category at the AMAs, marking a major step forward for diversity in country music, a genre that has long been dominated by white artists.

The news broke on the AMAs official X account, sparking celebration across social media, especially among her loyal fanbase, the Beyhive.

Fans were praised for their nonstop support and voting, helping push Beyoncé to this historic moment.

But Cowboy Carter is about more than just awards. Released on March 29, 2024, as the second part of her Renaissance trilogy, the album shines a light on the Black roots of country music.

Inspired by Beyoncé’s childhood in Houston, where she grew up attending rodeos and listening to country and zydeco music, the album honors Black pioneers often left out of the country’s story.

Songs like “Texas Hold ’Em” broke barriers, becoming the first country song by a Black woman to top both the Billboard Hot 100 and Hot Country Songs charts.

Beyoncé also brought attention to other Black country voices like Linda Martell, the first commercially successful Black female country artist, and Shaboozey, whose single “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” reached No. 1 on the Hot Country Songs chart.

For the first time in history, two Black artists led the chart back-to-back.

The 2025 AMAs, held at Fontainebleau Las Vegas, also sparked debate when presenter Megan Moroney credited the Carter Family with “inventing country music.”

Shaboozey’s reaction went viral, reigniting talks about how Black musicians like Lesley Riddle and others deeply shaped the genre’s origins. Experts like Francesca Royster say Cowboy Carter is helping people rediscover country music’s true history.

Despite her success at the AMAs, Beyoncé was snubbed at the 2025 Academy of Country Music Awards, highlighting the challenges Black artists still face in country music.

Still, her achievements are undeniable.

Records Broken By Cowboy Carter

Cowboy Carter broke Spotify records as the most-streamed country album by a female artist in a single day and debuted at No. 1 on both the Billboard 200 and Top Country Albums charts.

The album’s success also led to a major Levi’s campaign and a worldwide Cowboy Carter Tour, which kicked off on April 28, 2025.

Beyoncé’s wins at the 2025 AMAs are more than trophies, they’re a turning point. With Cowboy Carter, she’s not just making music—she’s rewriting history and opening the door for more Black artists in country music.
