Boko Haram Kills Army Captain, Soldier in Midnight Attack on Borno Community

In the early hours of Wednesday, May 7, 2025, Boko Haram terrorists launched a deadly attack on Izge community in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State, resulting in the deaths of a Nigerian Army Captain and a private soldier. The assault, which occurred around 1:00 a.m., has heightened tensions in the region, underscoring the persistent threat posed by insurgent groups in northeastern Nigeria.

According to military sources, the terrorists stormed Izge community and engaged troops in a fierce gun battle. Despite the soldiers’ efforts to repel the attack, the encounter led to the tragic loss of the army captain and a private soldier. The Emir of Gwoza, His Royal Highness Alhaji Mohammed Shehu Timta, confirmed the incident, describing it as unfortunate and expressing concern over the recurring attacks in the area.

The attack is part of a series of violent incidents attributed to Boko Haram and its splinter group, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), which continue to pose significant security challenges in Borno State and surrounding regions. Despite ongoing military operations aimed at dismantling these insurgent groups, they have maintained the capacity to launch attacks on both civilian populations and military targets.

This latest incident comes just weeks after President Bola Tinubu directed service chiefs to intensify efforts to end the persistent killings and restore peace in the northern parts of the country. The federal government has reiterated its commitment to combating terrorism and ensuring the safety of all Nigerians.

The Nigerian Army has yet to release an official statement regarding the Izge attack. However, security analysts emphasize the need for enhanced intelligence gathering, improved logistical support for troops, and increased collaboration with local communities to effectively counter the insurgency.

Residents of Gwoza and neighboring communities are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to security agencies. The government continues to call for unity and cooperation among citizens to overcome the threats posed by insurgent groups and restore lasting peace to the region.
