It doesn’t really matter if you’re a fashion guru, a fashion enthusiast, an aspiring stylist or fashion entrepreneur. Fashion documentaries offer each person a front row seat and first hand knowledge on the chaos, cultural moments and iconic personalities that truly define the industry.
From a look through fashion week and behind the scenes on things designers, stylists and their muse do. These documentaries go beyond the clothes to explore deep areas of passion, power and pressure that fuels the world of fashion.
Below are six must watch documentaries that will not only inspire you but fuel your passion.
1. McQueen.
This documentary goes through the life of Alexander McQueen while showcasing British fashion & what was going through his mind. It shows the start of his career as a teenager to launching his own brand before his suicide in 2010.
2. The True Cost.
I would really encourage everyone who loves fashion to watch this especially with the discourse around shein. it seriously goes into the depths of fast fashion, capitalism & consumerism for workers in developing countries and the environment. Truly heartbreaking but you might find it inspiring.
3. Coco Before Chanel & Yves Saint Laurent.
Both these films essentially depict the lives of both these designers, their stories & launch into stardom.
4. Phantom Thread.
I love this movie because it displays the simplicity of being inspired, a dress designer falls in love with a waitress and she essentially becomes his muse. love what it shows about the influence of ‘regular’ people on fashion.
5. The September Issue.
A documentary on Anna Wintour constructing the issue for the most awaited month in fashion back in 2007 which included over 800 pages. It depicts exactly what it takes to run a global successful magazine.
6. Dior & I.
Raf Simons creates his first ever haute couture collection for Dior, clothes and designs are beautiful & shows where there can be a connection/disconnect between the vision of designers & the steam stress
