A witness from the Department of State Services (DSS) testified in court that no weapons or materials related to terrorism were found on Nnamdi Kanu during his arrest in Lagos. This testimony emerged during the ongoing trial of Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who faces charges related to terrorism and secessionist activities.

The DSS operative recounted the circumstances of Kanu’s arrest, stating that he was apprehended at the Golden Tulip Essential Lagos Airport Hotel in Ikeja, Lagos, on October 14, 2015. At the time, Kanu was reportedly lodging under a fictitious name and was accompanied by a woman. Despite initial denials by hotel staff regarding Kanu’s presence, the DSS team conducted a search and located him in one of the rooms. The operative emphasized that during the arrest, no weapons or incriminating materials were found on Kanu’s person.

This testimony is significant as it pertains to the charges leveled against Kanu, which include allegations of terrorism. The absence of weapons at the time of his arrest could influence the court’s assessment of the severity and credibility of the charges.

Kanu’s legal team has consistently argued that the charges are unfounded and politically motivated. They have also raised concerns about his treatment in custody and the fairness of the legal proceedings. In previous court sessions, Kanu has denied all allegations, asserting that his advocacy for Biafra is rooted in peaceful self-determination.

The trial has garnered significant attention both domestically and internationally, given the sensitive nature of the issues involved and the potential implications for Nigeria’s unity and security. Observers continue to monitor the proceedings closely, awaiting further developments.
